New Neighborhood to Open

The sims historical preservation society is currently doing research on town development starting from the beginning to help us better understand historical town development. We have a rare opportunity to watch as sims move into a planned community complete with housing, apartments, community lots and businesses, but with no one to run them. The developer died and the project stalled before enough businesses or even municipal services could open, the six brave sims that settle here will be watched as they try to build a community.

The new website is currently being built here: http://silvergrovesims.blogspot.com/ Shortly documentaries of resident life, online versions of the local paper, and personal journals will become available.

Until further notice the SHPS communications will be delivered by Roxie Rasmussen, the landlady of Mrs. silvers boardinghouse the first stop for all sims wishing to reside in Silver Grove Valley.

Tidal wave destroys Peacock Isles!

The destructive tidal wave known only as the "Blue Screen of Death" associated with computers everywhere has destroyed the Peacock Isles. Unfortunately, no one could be saved. The Historical society had a small memorial for those who died in the tragic disaster. The residents of peacock Isle will be missed.

In other news, the historical society will be implementing a new project soon. Details will be posted as we know more.

Local Student Discovers Planet

Derek Zephyr Junior at PII recently discovered a planet orbiting a binary star system. "I' love science, how the stars are moving so fast like some kind of dance, but you can't even tell because they are so far away. This is the second planet I've discovered. Perhaps one day students will be able to really have the whole sky charted."

Derek is a member of the Astronomy club and a major in economics.

The Astronomy Club gives $500 to any member that discovers a star as a part of charting the night sky. Each member is asked to donate $25 for a 7 year membership (teens and children are free).

Dressing for Success
by Derek Zephyr

In today's climate how does one dress for success? The peacock Isles focus mainly on tourist business so a suit a tie as such that might work at a bank on the mainland seems out of place and stuffy here, reminding people on vacation of the jobs they left behind.

In island businesses a more casual code is usually assumed. Charles Zephyr, owner of Sunrise Bakery wears a loud blue print and keep his shirt unbuttoned almost to the point of immodesty, but it works. Why? He's selling the island flavor. He's selling the romantic artist stereotype and accenting it with the colors of the island, giving tourist what they want before they even look at the merchandise or try their hand at sculpting.

Beatrice Zephyr does the sam in her own way a pink floral with a fishing cest over it convets the heart of the island, our wildlife and our hobbies, people see the whole of the island in their souvenir purchase.

Dressing for success means something different here on the islands, as it should because what we are selling is not a thing but a feeling.

Sunrise Bakery Reveiw Positive
Sunrise bakery received it's second positive review from Laela Catnip. "Since the first review the bakery has expanded it's selection and become known as a place for artists to hang out. It's become a great place for locals as well as tourists."

Greenworks Grocery to Close
Greennworks Grocery will be closing during the university school year for the next few years. The owner recent graduate and freshman at Peacock Isle Institute will be attending university and be unable to open the store for normal business hours. Mr. Avalon has said that he will have fully operational hours during summer and winter breaks. He has also redirected some of his suppliers to stop directly at peoples homes, specifically the Zephyr house since in order for the bakery in town to function, fresh food would be necessary.

More Badges Earned Free
More badges were earned in the vocational education awards program. 2 silver badges were earned though the online program. The program is also offered free of charge to students attending PII. 4 bronze badges and a silver badge were awarded to students this year.
"I'm glad I can do this while I go to school. I know my business is suffering without anyone to run it. It's good to know that when I go back the usiness can get better because of my skills.", said freshman Alrick Avalon.

2nd Naked Concert at PII Concert Hall
The 2nd annual concert to benefit Native Islander University stipends was hosted by the more exhibitionist members of the student body, or bodies as the case may be. Sole Steepback played piano and the streaker Zayna Nerd sang ballads made popular by Merlin's Hill's Gabriella Newson. Sole even sang some native songs put to an industrial background beat and staging.

This was the second in a series of concerts to raise funds for university students. This year the concert raised almost no money, possibly beacause the new native islander is not so new anymore.

Naked Concert Earns Students Tuition

Sole Steepback the native islander found only two years ago is earning his tuition in a startling new way. He and other students played instruments completely naked. The show itself was free but he earned $400 in tips to be put towards tuition.

Local Student Discovers Planet

Derek Zephyr Sophomore at PII recently discovered a planet orbiting a red dwarf star. "I've always loved science. I started the Astronomy club last year. Who knew I would be able to discover a planet. The research facilities at the college are just cutting edge. I was listening to my teacher describe how scientists know its a planet and then that night, Wham! there is was."

In addition to the planet, Derek and his classmate Sole both discovered stars with the sophisticated technical equipment available at the university. Both are member of the Astronomy Club through the tuition at the college.

The Astronomy Club gives $500 to any member that discovers a star as a part of charting the night sky. Each member is asked to donate $25 for a 7 year membership (teens and children are free).

Better Business

Business is continuing to get better for all island businesses. every store gained a rank in business this year. Charles Zephyr had this to say. "It's getting hard to sell, work the register and restock all within business hours. Soon I may have to close for a bit just to restock.
Greenworks Grocery has been given a rank of 2 of 10. Store owner, Alrick Avalon was pleased. "I only stock good quality food and sundries. I hope people enjoy shopping here and aren't just here because it's the only place to go." The 17 year old owns the family business. He's not sure what will happen when he attends college. "I've good enough grades to go and I might apply for another scholarship. I want to be an architect one day. I still haven't figured out what can be done with the business."

Badges Earned Free
Three more bronze badges were earned in the vocational education awards program. and 2 silver sales badges were also earned. This is the first time a silver class was offered. Beatrice Zephyr earned three of the badges herself this year alone. "I'm taking full advantage of this opportunity. I never got to go to university, but I run my own business and need all the assistance I can get to make sure I'm successful at it."

Naked Concert at PII Concert Hall
The concert to benefit Native Islander University stipends was hosted by the more exhibitionist members of the student body, or bodies as the case may be. Sole Steepback played piano and Derek Zephyr played violin with sheet music in strategic places. And the streaker Zayna Nerd danced to the delight of all the men in the room.

They played such risque songs as Llama Love, and Love your Bones. The concert may be held again if enough interest is shown in the project.

Clunkers Converted
For several years PII has offered students an opportunity to renovate cars for credit and for extra cash. Clunkers from the mainland are ferried over and stored on site. Students may rebuild, renovate, and decorate the cars and then sell them for a profit. This year Sole Steepback has renovated and sold two cars, one each semester. The Net profit, $8,800 is more than enough to pay for his tuition. These cars are available for sale and will be shipped free of charge back to the mainland for any tourist that buys one. Each car sells for $5,200.

SHPS - 2005 Report - Year 5

Year 5 Report: 2005

Records maintained by
Beatrice Zephyr

Programs Available
  1. Business Assistance Program: $10,000 for any adult sim wishing to open a business and reside in the Isles. This is a one time grant. If the business is ever sold the grant would need to be re-paid.
  2. Vocational Aid Program: Free vocational training through 2007. Normally $1,000 per class, for a limited time Peacock Isle Institute is offering adult training to Island residents.
  3. Artifacts Buyback Program: In cooperation with PII, SHPS has offered to buy back any artifacts found during their archeological dig to eventually be put in a museum highlighting the Islands history.
Grants Awarded
  • 2 Business assistance grants were awarded to open Craftables and the Sunrise Bakery and Art Studio. Both of these businesses are currently ranked 4 of 10. Both have won LeTourneau Prizes. The Sunrise Bakery has received a positive review in the paper as well.
  • 8 badges have been handed out to the adults of the Peacock Isles. (2 Bronze sales, 2 Bronze Restock, 2 Bronze Register, 2 Silver Sales)
  • $2,750 worth of artifacts bought from the PII archeological dig including:
  • 4 rocks
  • 4 maps
  • 1 bone
  • 1 sim model
  • 1 frog statue
  • 1 set of vases
Business in the Islands
There are now three businesses on the Island run by residents. (Businesses operated by private conglomerates and the SHPS are not included in this count.)
  • Craftables - handcrafted works of art from around the islands
  • Greenworks Grocery - basic produce and sundries shipped from the mainland
  • Sunrise Bakery and Artist Studio - bakery specializing in cakes, coffee, and creativity

They are rank 4,2, and 4 respectively. As of the last report only one business was operational at a rank of 0 and was closed due to multiple deaths in the family. This is a vast improvement

Residents in the Islands
The Island population has grown 20% from 5 individuals to 6 individuals. The added individual was a Native Islander missed in the original Census. There are currently 2 adults, 2 young adults, and two teens living in the Islands. Only one of them is a woman and no one is currently married.

Island Discoveries
A new native Islander was found and is now attending university. Several artifacts were discovered including a rooster fertility icon. (We could not get this for the museum as the scientists have taken it back to the mainland for study.) We also found several maps of the surrounding areas that may be of great historical significance.

Island Progress
There are currently more Island students at uni than there are university schooled graduates in the entire Island chain. The businesses that have started have blossomed. Tourist trade is increasing and scientific interest in the islands is at an all time high.

Overall even in these short five years we have made a significant difference in the lives of the islanders. The money spent on revitalization was well spent if the program ended tomorrow. However, we hope that we may continue the programs available as the fate of these islands is still uncertain.

Recommendations
I recommend that the SHPS revitalization efforts continue as scheduled. Once more residents are drawn to the area we may be able to not only open more businesses, but be able to reopen basic services such as schools, medical centers, and emergency services.

A+ for Peacock Isle Institute Islander

The native Islander found last year has completed his first year with an A+. Sole Steepback started with art and archaeology and quickly caught on to mechanics behind cars. He discovered a love of Music and Dance and even earned a bit of money with his first performance.

In addition to good grades with no formal schooling before in his life, he also managed to pay his own way by restoring a car and explaining about items found in the local archeological dig. Sole has passed his skill exams with a ranking of at least 2 in all skills. This fall he even made chocobunnies for the winter fundraiser.

He has also been joined by another student from the Islands, Derek Zephyr who received a Scholar's grant. Derek Zephyr is also of Native Islander descent. Derek is interested in astronomy and is taking violin lessons. This is the first time in 50 years that two native Islanders have attended university at the same time.

SimCity Astronomy Club Peacock Islands Chapter Established

Teenage friends Derek Zephyr and Alrick Avalon decided to found the Peacock Island Chapter of the Astronomy Club. Each boy enjoys staring into the night sky. Alrick Avalon said, "All the other guys who live in the complex are scientists and techies so stargazing is something we can all talk about and I think finding out where all the stars are, being a part of that is really neat."

Alrick was the first to discover a star. The Astronomy Club gives $500 to any member that discovers a star as a part of charting the night sky. Each member is asked to donate $25 for a 7 year membership (teens and children are free).

Archeological Dig Yields Fowl Fertility Icon

Scientists focusing their research on the culture and history of the Peacock Islands have unearthed an intact piece of pottery in the shape of a rooster on a nest. Sources say it is a fertility symbol of the Native Islanders, all things of a spiritual nature somehow relating to animals of the four elements. The rooster was placed by the bed for maximum effect. Those couples wishing to remain childless would not even have one in the house.

Ethan Barrett, lead archeologist said, "This discovery is marvelous. Delving into the superstitions and religious aspects of the natives is a rare opportunity and this is the first evidence of a fertility symbol in the culture."

Local Grocer Getting Better Business

For the past four years the grocery store has remained unranked due to it's limited hours. Since there are no residents to take employee jobs, the teenage owner must fit the store in between school and homework. However, recently the Greenworks Grocery has been given a rank of 1 of 10. Store owner, Alrick Avalon was pleased. "I'm happy that people want to shop here. I'm a bit shy so I know that puts people off sometimes, you know like I'm not paying attention, but I am really. I guess the produce can speak for itself. I only stock good quality food and sundries."

First Scholarship Awarded
The first scholarship of the Peacock Islands has been awarded to Derek Zephyr. He maintained at least an A- during his public school career and received the Scholar's Grant for attendance at Peacock Isle Institute which he began attending in the fall.

Downtown is Smoking

Making out on the town is the latest thing as spring, or at the least the romantic thing that spring usually generates rushed into downtown Tail Feather Island. Here the editor in cheif is busy with Laela catnip the Roving Review Reporter.

They went on a date to the downtown district where they can enjoy a club, park, beauty salon, shops, and lounge all without using a car or taxi. There are even a few residences right in downtown, but be careful and be sure to knock. This reporter forgot that important rule and walked in the top floor resident in nothing but her birthday suit.
If you wish to go downtown, you can take the municipally run ferry by either walking or through taking a car or taxi. Many of the establishments are open until the wee hours of the morning, so even if you're a complete night owl you can join your friends of lovers for a fun night on the town. Currently all community lots that are open are run by the Sim Historical Preservation Society until someone local is able to run them.
