PTP - 2001 edition

Four Die in Freak Crash

The Zephyr's Plane collided with the Avalon's Fishing boat resulting in the deaths of Annie and Albert Avalon, as well as Daniel and Evelyn Zephyr. The small prop plane used by the only pilot in the area, Daniel Zephyr, is usually used to escort tourists on tours, dust crops, or perform land surveys.

Evelyn Zephyr, mainland wife of Charles Zephyr overdosed on Sunday and was being flown to SimCity Medical Center for treatment. Along the way the plane experienced medical problems. In the dense morning fog surrounding the island experts presume that Daniel headed for the only lights he could see hoping it was the mainland runway.

Those lights were the fishing boat of Annie and Albert Avalon, owners of Greenworks Grocers. The plane and boat collided, killing all four individuals instantly. The group funeral was held Monday.

This tragic accident puts a stark light on the tenuous future of the Peacock Islands. Only two families remain and both of them have been shattered by recent events. If the town cannot be revitalized soon, the islands will become deserted, the only inhabitants will by the ghosts of hope and despair.

Two Businesses Reopen Thank to SHPS Grant

The Sim Historical Preservation Society has accepted the Peacock Islands into their revitalization program. The program is specifically designed for towns with unique history and culture that have dwindled in economic status and population. Te Peacock Isles have met all criteria to be considered an "At-Risk Township". The local Spoksperson for the SHPS, Beatrice Zephyr, says. "The revitalization project is essential for the preservation of the Peacock Isles. We have too much culture that will be lost if the few remaining residents don't have opportunities to make a living and a life on the islands. The SHPS will allow us to grow out town once more, as it should be."

We now are able to get basic services including electric, water, trash, postal services, police, fire assistance, medical care and schooling, through several mainland towns. In addition the SHPS will award any adult that chooses to both live in the islands and operated an island based business a grant of $10,000.

In addition, the first 7 years of the business will be free of taxes and licensing fees. Two businesses have reopened thank in part to the SHPS grant.

Editor's Note
My name is Charles Zephyr. The Zephyr family has been in the Islands since the 1700's. I grew up here. I remember dancing at Trends, getting penny candy from Greenworks Grocer, and Sweets from the Sunrise Bakery. I recently moved back with my son. Editor-in-chief: Charles Zephyr

SimCity Supplement paper made possible by a grant from the Sim Historical Preservation Society.
Serving the Peacock Islands greater area.

Things have changed. The only store left open is Greenworks, and most of the houses lay as deserted as the pirate ship on the coast. I have agreed to act as Editor in Chief until someone else is willing to take over the job. I hope that the news in this paper will illustrate our success at bringing the town that was was my childhood home back to life.

Obituaries

Albert Avalon: Loving Husband and Father, pictured here with wife and son. Died fishing with his wife Annie Avalon when a prop plane hit the boat. A born Islander tracing his lineage back to Greenbard's crew, Albert owned the Greenworks Grocer. He supplied the fish himself. Previously he was a deep sea fisherman and a regular at the Sea Cove Bar until it closed it's doors ten years ago. He was 34 years old, survived by his 13 yr old son, Alrick.

Annie Avalon: Wonderful wife and mother. Died in a tragic fishing boat accident involving a prop plane. She was an avid gardener and produced many of the flowers available at Greenworks Grocer herself. Daniel Zephyr: Local pilot died tragically after his plane suffered mechanical failure on his way to SimCity. Self-proclaimed tinkerer, he loved to make children's toys and taught as a guest lecturer at Peacock Isle Institute on restoring automobiles. He was 39 years old and is survived by his loving wife Beatrice (36) and 15 year old son Derek.

Business News

Island Open for Business
Craftables and sunrise Bakery/Artist studio are now open for business. Bought by the Zephyr family, the two businesses were re-opened in part through a grant from SHPS.

Craftables on the south side of Market St sells handmade crafts from craft stations and from catalogs supplied by local artists from the Islands and near mainland areas. Current sellers are souvenir pot holders and pet pirate bricks alongside jellyfish lamps, and handmade candles. Beatrice Zephyr bought the place in honor of her late husband who worked as a toy maker until the store closed over 8 years ago.

Sunrise Bakery and artist studio was reopened by Charles Zephyr. On the north side of Market st. the bakery downstairs offers a variety of seasonal delicacies, wedding and birthday cakes, and the occasional ham sandwich for hungry tourists. In the studio above local artists are encouraged to work in the space. Some artists pay for their sweets in works of art others consign with the Sunrise Bakery to sell their creations. Three potters wheels and a sculpture creation station reside upstairs. Tourists can watch art being made, buy pieces as they leave the artist's hands or take part in the creation themselves.

Letourneou Prize Winner
Sunrise bakery and artist studio won the prize of $1,000 for outstanding service to the community and "innovative design concept bringing together food and creativity". Not only is the coffee great, but it allows artists to create as patrons watch. It's entertainment tourism, precisely the thing the Peacock Isles need to turn the economy around.
