Native Islander Found on Mountainside

The Sim Historical Preservation Society thought that according to Island records the last of the Native Islanders had died off leaving only offspring that had mixed heritage. However, a young man was recently discovered on the steep backside of the Peacock Isle mountain scratching a living fishing and gathering in the traditional islander way. His mother had passed sometime ago. Known only as Sole, the SHPS quickly offered him the last name of Steepback, the nickname for native islanders and sent him off to Peacock Isle Institute to learn a trade.

His heritage was confirmed when he saw a picture of Daniel Zephyr, the last known Native Islander and said it looks like his mother's uncle who he saw once as a child. Typically Native Islanders that have decided not to mainstream retreat to the desolate places left on the Islands and may never see anyone other than natives.

Beatrice Zephyr commented, "I can see Daniel in his face, it's clear to me that this poor boy who has no skills or friends should immediately be brought to the forefront of the revitalization issue. He is a living example of out historic culture, and without his family we must step in and be the village that raises him. We can learn so much from him. The SHPS prepared funds in case a true Islander was found. It's called the Legacy fund. Land on the Island of Peacock cove has been set aside for him and his following generations. The entire family will be exempt from business taxes, administration fees of any kind and all vocational training will be offered free of charge. We hope one day that we can see his many descendants as far as 10 generations out populate this island once again."

Sole began PII in the fall semester and received an A+ as well as being able to pay his full tuition bill through finding artifacts in the archealogical dig and more than that explaining what they were used for to students and professors alike.

Editor's Note
Charles Zephyr: The discovery of Sole Steepback is a boon to the entire island chain. The living history the boy possesses is already being used by archeologists in the area to identify artifacts, and more tourists come to the Islands because the culture here is now a living one to be experienced instead of some dead thing to simply stare at. We must take care that we do not abuse this boy, either in taking him or his heritage for granted or in spoiling him due to his heritage to that the core of his being is changed through our interference.

Business News

Businesses Getting Better Bussiness

All businesses are getting better business these days. Both Sunrise Bakery and Craftables are ranked as a solid 3 of 10 stars. Both owners have taken advantage of the free vocational training so now customers have competent clerks and sales associates. Only the grocery remained unranked due to it's limited hours. Since there are no residents to take employee jobs, the teenage owner must fit the store in between school and homework.

Vocational training still free
Recent online courses have been available to residents of the Peacock Islands. Business owners and employees have been encouraged to take advantage of these offers. For all Peacock Isle residents Practical business training will be free of charge until the end of simyear 2007 (simday7). After such time, each class resulting in a badge will have a tuition of $1000.

So far Charles Zephyr has earned a bronze badge in both sales and register operation. Beatrice Zephyr has earned a bronze register operation badge, and her son, who often accompainies her to the store has earned a bronze sales badge.

Student Field Trips becoming Common

Tour groups to the islands are now after a new niche market, students. Field trips from mainland schools to experience the "Island Life" is the current hot topic.

Typically the island kids are shunned when attending the mainland schools due to their differing clothes, accents and culture. One mainland teacher said "This gives those students a chance to shine. Why one student, Alrick, normally very shy, but he explained the Island economy to our 7th grade class very well and I believe one of the students, Little Liza even had a crush on him before returning to school."
These tour groups are often combined with science trips to the archeological dig in progress. Trips to the lighthouse and the small market area are often included. This has the potential to be a boon for business and perhaps one day these students may choose to settle here as well.
